Typically, high-performance V-bottom measures from, say, 25 feet to upward of 50 feet. The longer the boat, the bigger the seas you can take on comfortably. Propulsion systems also are varied.
Buyers can get inboard engines with horsepower that ranges from to upward of 1,! The better news is that thanks to Mercury Racing, modern motors are more reliable than ever, and they come with sterndrives and propellers that hold up to all that power. Outboard power also has been making leaps and bounds, particularly in the last few years.
Remember when HP was a lot of horsepower? In general, boaters are much more aware of how eco-friendly boating practices can help reduce the impact on fragile ocean ecosystems and water quality.
Here again, Mercury Racing has been doing the most advanced work in high-performance outboards. With options from to horsepower, outboard power is now a viable performance option, especially when you consider that using multiple engines is easier with outboards than it is with inboard and sterndrive applications. Another popular type of high-performance powerboat is the catamaran. Because they pack air under their hulls and benefit from less wetted area, catamarans capitalize on their horsepower more than V-bottoms.
More wetted area means more hydrodynamic drag. More hydrodynamic drag means more load on the engines because water is sticky. Compared with an automobile engine, boat engines face a far more brutal load cycle.
Imagine driving your truck up a steep hill at 50 mph in second gear while pulling a trailer. A catamaran of the same length to a V-hull boat will always be faster with identical power. Modern offshore catamarans are capable of speeds in excess of mph. You can get them with twin inboard sterndrive propulsion systems up to 1, horsepower per engine, or a phalanx of outboards strapped to the back at up to horsepower apiece.
It is a glorious time in performance boating. Nearly all of the largest performance boat builders are now making them in greater numbers than traditional offshore V-bottoms. Some have abandoned traditional performance boats altogether. Go-fast center-consoles got their start in offshore fishing tournaments where speed to the hot spots is essential.
Most, if not all of the mainstream manufacturers build them. Donzi , Wellcraft and Fountain , to name a few, already built some seriously fast fishing machines. Center-consoles offered a lot more deck space and seating options.
They could be used for fishing, or poker runs, or just going out to cowboy around, and part of the reason for the increased popularity of the center-console is the advent of big-power outboards. The top of the industry, the boats that get the most attention are the offshore V bottoms and catamarans between 35 and 50 feet.
In a very real sense, offshore V-bottoms are what gave the industry its start. These are the boats actors Kurt Russell and Don Johnson raced. These are the boats drug runners used to carry their cargo to U. These are the boats that carved out the niche that make the industry what it is. The K7 jet-engine hydroplane was designed by English brothers Ken and Lew Norris with the help of racer Donald Campbell who set seven speed records between and including the MPH one.
In restoration work on Bluebird was completed in and test runs reached speeds of MPH, but for safety reasons, there are currently no plans to attempt to reach any higher speeds. Spirit of Australia was designed and built by Australian motorboat racer Ken Warby who holds the Ken and his son David have recently completed building the Spirit of Australia II, a more powerful vessel that is undergoing extensive trials with a record-breaking attempt targeted for But the rules regarding boat speed were designed to help keep all people out on the water safe, from the family enjoying a trip in their pleasure yacht to the fisherman casting a line off of his sit on top kayak.
